Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. Here at Joyce, Jackman & Bell Insurors, we love a good party, and lucky for us, the holiday season is filled with them. But as trained insurance professionals we can't go without mentioning a few tips to keep you safe throughout the holiday season!
Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season and cut down on the likelihood of having to file a claim.
Holiday Lighting Safety
When planning your personal display, be careful to make sure that your set up is safe. That means keeping cords neatly tucked away and organized so that they do not present a trip and fall hazard. Also, be sure BEFORE you put up any lights that you have checked the cord for fray or tears, as they may present the potential for electrical shock.
Open Flames and Fire Hazards
According to the NFPA, two out of every five home decoration fires are started by candles. If you are planning on celebrating with candles or sparklers, be it for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa or the New Year, keep your open flame away from holiday decorations or any other flammable material. And remember to blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
