Happy Holidays from our office to yours!
We know that some of our staff is heading out of town for Christmas, so we thought we’d share a few tips that we’ve found helpful for protecting our homes while we are away.
Talk to your security company
If you are going to be away for an extended period of time let your alarm or security company know.
Talk to a neighbor
Ask someone that you trust to keep an eye on your house while you are out of town. They can not only keep a look out for suspicious activity, but they can also pick up your gathering newspapers and circulars.
It would also be a good idea to ask someone, or schedule a company to come and shovel or plow your driveway.
Disconnect your computer from the internet and make sure that it is password protected. A thief will have no problem unplugging your laptop and throwing it in a bag with the rest of your important belongings, and while an experienced hacker will have no problem accessing your files, you don’t need to make it any easer for them.
Time it out
Set a timer for your outdoor holiday lights, and also for one or more lighting sources indoors. If you can make it look like someone is home and shutting off all the lights you are more likely to scare off a potential thief.
Lock the door leading from the garage into the house
There is something about that door that people don’t like to lock it. We know that it is more accessible for you that way, but it also provides an easy entry point into your home for a burglar.
